FLUORESCENT BULB DISPOSAL

Safely dispose of your unwanted fluorescent bulbs at Civic Recycling

If you’re unsure where to safely and sustainably dispose of your fluorescent bulbs, look no further than your partner at Civic Recycling. We can help you keep your office, shop, garage, home or workspace free of the clutter caused by old or broken fluorescent bulbs.

We are committed to the environment, recycling, and providing a full range of services to Calgary’s electrical industry. As a result of our ongoing commitment, we accept fluorescent bulbs for recycling to prevent them from ending up in a landfill.

Did you know that a standard fluorescent bulb contains approximately 23 mg of mercury? The mercury in a single fluorescent bulb can compromise 20,000 litres of water. Although many provinces, states, and countries worldwide have banned used fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) from landfills by classifying them as hazardous waste, the Alberta Government has not done so yet. However, Civic Recycling offers a safe alternative to the landfill for disposing of fluorescent bulbs, tubes and lamps.

Our Bulb Eater® 3 is the next generation of Lamp Crusher, which crushes spent fluorescent lamps while capturing over 99.99% of the mercury and phosphor dust contained within standard fluorescent lamps. Our bulb eater can process T12, T8, T5, 4′ and 8′ fluorescent tubes, U-Tubes, and most CFLs. The mercury and phosphor dust collects in a three-stage filter, and our used filters are sent for proper disposal with a local hazardous waste management company.

FLUORESCENT BALLAST RECYCLING

Whenever you think green - think Civic Recycling!

We understand that finding the right and environmentally friendly way to dispose of the fluorescent ballasts taking up space in your workplace can be challenging. Civic Recycling is proud to offer fluorescent ballast disposal in Calgary.

Regardless of the number of fluorescent ballasts you must recycle, we can recycle them at no charge. We provide your business with Certificates of Recycling in compliance with environmental regulations, including LEED Certification. We can recycle office tower ballasts for property owners, or we can recycle them for homeowners.

Often, fluorescent lighting ballasts that pre-date 1979 may contain PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls). If you are unsure if your ballasts contain PCBs, click here to be directed to a government document providing you with part numbers from most major manufacturers.

We accept all NON-PCB fluorescent ballasts for disposal. You may drop off yours at any time during our regular business hours. We also offer a pick-up service for large quantities of fluorescent ballasts for recycling (over 100). This service costs $50.00 within Calgary city limits.
