7 surprising ways breaker inspections are more refreshing than new socks

7 SURPRISING WAYS BREAKER INSPECTIONS ARE MORE REFRESHING THAN NEW SOCKS breaker testing voltage tes

Professionally Reconditioned Breakers

Peace of mind and quality service are refreshing in this day and age. With an increasing focus on speed, in communication and in service, quality can often be compromised for the sake of convenience. We feel that those two concepts don’t have to be mutually exclusive. Things can get done in a timely manner while being held to a certain standard of quality; a concept we firmly believe and actively subscribe to. With a little hard work and a commitment to our customers, we strive to do things properly AND efficiently.

Again, doing things properly is a refreshing way to do business; some might say better than a new pair of socks. We thought it best to take you through all the ways our unique testing and inspection process is extremely refreshing and why it makes us Canada’s number one circuit breaker specialist. With all of that said, here are the seven surprising ways breaker inspections are more refreshing than new socks:

Civic Recycling Certified Breakers

1. In-depth breaker Inspections

Each circuit breaker we test goes through a thorough inspection that leaves no stone unturned. When it comes to electrical equipment, no corner should be cut and that’s something we pride ourselves on. Each breaker gets the in-depth treatment that it should, whether it’s one of our own that we’re selling or one a customer has brought in.

2. Certified breaker inspections and Testing

Each of our breakers, when tested, meet or exceed the standards set out by PEARL, NEMA, NETA, IEEE, and those laid out by the manufacturer. We don’t cut corners, as these specifics suggest. We want to keep our customers coming back, as well as attract new ones, and we believe the best way to do this is by offering quality service that we stand behind.

3. We Sell and Reconditioned

Since we’re merely not taking in others breakers and reconditioning them, we sell our own reconditioned breakers as well, we have to adhere to certain standards of quality. This also means we know the products inside and out. You don’t get to number one in the country without having an in-depth and complete knowledge of the products you’re dealing with.

4. Written Test Results

With every breaker we test and recondition comes a unique tracking number. This number corresponds to a written report that details the test results. This acts as a sort of insurance for the breaker you’re purchasing and offers peace of to you, your business, and your potential customers. It shows that we stand behind our work and have no issues letting you know what went into the breaker you purchased; complete transparency.

5. Testing as a Service

Not only do we recondition and sell our breakers, but we’re happy to take in and test any breaker that is brought in to us. It’s part of the service we provide and part of our greater goal, which is to ensure all breakers out there are safe for use. If you ever need some questions answered, don’t hesitate to bring in a breaker for our inspection.

6. Civic 36-point Visual Inspection

Part of the testing service we provide is a complete 36-point visual inspection of the interior and exterior of every breaker we take in after a thorough cleaning of the product. This ensures we take care of any issues with the breaker before the actual testing begins. It may seem like a large undertaking, but it pays dividends in the long wrong and allows us to guarantee all of our products.

7. 100% One Year Guarantee

We guarantee every breaker, new or reconditioned, 100% for a year after we sell it. The guarantee is not something we take lightly, but it’s obviously a testament to how much we believe in all of the products we sell. It’s a simple and straightforward statement and something we really believe in. We love breaker inspections!

Reconditioned Circuit Breakers from Civic Recycling

As always, we provide open lines of communication as well. If any questions need to be answered we can always be reached via email at [email protected], or by phone. Should the purchasing of a new or reconditioned product require our expertise, we’re always happy to answer any questions and to assist in the process.

How breaker testing can give you peace of mind

Civic breaker blog testing tested circuit breakers knob equipment wires

Trust Quality Breaker Testing from Civic

When you’re purchasing reconditioned circuit breakers, whether it be for personal or business purposes, it’s important to know that they’re going to work exactly as advertised. At Civic Recycling, it’s not something we merely take for granted; it’s something that we take pride in and have the utmost confidence in. What’s more, every reconditioned circuit breaker comes with a written test report, to offer peace of mind. We’ll discuss this in greater depth in the subsequent text. Now, we understand that simply saying these things won’t convince you that our products are any better than anyone else’s, which works just fine as we have ample evidence to show you.

Reconditioned and Tested Circuit Breakers

At Civic, we put each and every reconditioned circuit breaker through a rigorous testing process that includes multiple stages. The first stages are a complete cleaning of the inside and outside, followed by a 36-point visual inspection of the interior and exterior of the breaker. Once things have been properly visually inspected and cleaned comes the actual breaker testing. Molded circuit breakers consist are three main parts: the insulation, the contacts, and the trip unit. Three different tests are required to test the three different components, which are as follows:

  • Insulation Resistance:

This test is done to verify the condition of the breaker’s insulating materials. Testing is performed using an insulation resistance test set at 1KV. The results of this test are included in the test report we spoke about.

  • Contact Resistance:

The second test performed is done to verify the current path in the breaker. Loose or bad connections, dirty hinge points or contacts, and burnt contacts will all show up as a high resistance reading. Testing is performed on each phase individually using a digital low resistance ohmmeter at 10amps, results are measured in milliohms and recorded, again, in the test report.

  • Over Current Trip Test:

The third test is to verify the time-current characteristics of the breaker. Testing is performed with direct injection to simulate an overload current. We have assembled over 2000 manufacturer’s trip curves, and test each phase on every molded case circuit breaker to ensure that it trips according to the manufacturer’s very own factory specifications. These results too will end up in the test report.

Civic Test Reports

If you’re not well-versed in this type of language, what we’re saying is that each and every circuit breaker we recondition and sell goes through a battery of tests to ensure it will perform at the highest levels possible. Each reconditioned breaker also has a test report attached to it. What this report includes the detailed results of each breaker. It’s something of an insurance policy when purchasing breakers, as you know that the breaker has been put through the necessary paces to perform the way it should. The test report has a unique tracking number attached to it so that it’s always there to reference for you.

As a further insurance policy on each breaker, testing is performed only by Certified Low Voltage Circuit Breaker Technicians. Not only that, but each reconditioned breaker will meet or exceed the standards set out by NEMA, NETA, IEEE, as well as the manufacturer’s own testing standards.

Our Breakers Just Work!

What all of this amounts to is that the breakers we sign off on are simply going to perform to the highest of specifications set out in the industry. Our breakers will work and not break. We stand behind the work we put into them and the products that we, in turn, sell to our customers. Should you have any further questions regarding our testing processes or what the right product for you is, don’t hesitate to contact our sales staff with any and all of your queries. We’ll get you properly outfitted with the product and services that are right for you.

This, paired with our knowledgeable staff, will assist you in finding the product that perfectly suits your needs. Whether you’re a wholesaler, working in oil and gas, or in the agricultural industry, we have the products and services that will suit the needs of any person or business. A brief conversation with any of our well-versed sales team will position you to purchase the best product for your needs.

Professionally Reconditioned Equipment

In addition to our wide selection of electrical products and services, we offer professionally reconditioned and refurbished circuit breakers. While some may be put off by the idea of a second-hand piece of electrical equipment, our breakers go through rigorous testing. Not only that, but each breaker is reconditioned by a Certified Breaker Technician, come with a written test, and are backed by a one year 100% guarantee. Not only will the product perform to the highest of standards, as you would expect, but the product guarantee offers peace of mind as well.

Breaker Testing and Inspections

To further provide peace of mind and quality, each breaker once cleaned goes through a 36-point visual inspection. Once the visual inspection has taken place, each breaker goes through a three different tests to further inspect its reliability and quality. The three tests are an insulation resistance test- to verify the condition of the breakers insulating materials, a contact resistance test- to verify the current path of the breaker, and an overcurrent trip test- which verifies the time-current characteristics of the breaker.

What we’re trying to say here is that even though these breakers are reconditioned, the vigorous testing and thoroughness of each test guarantees that the product will operate exactly how a new product would. The refurbished product also realizes a cost saving which is passed along to the customer.

At the end of the day, no matter who you are and what size your business is, we have the products and the knowledge to take care of your needs. From the Obsolete to the Obvious

Breakers black square d switch on off obsolete obvious

Civic Recycling Obsolete and Obvious Reconditioned Products

For many of us, the idea of buying something “used” or supposedly “obsolete” doesn’t carry a positive connotation. Buying something that isn’t fresh out of the package can often mean that it’s not in working condition or is not as aesthetically pleasing. Sometimes this is the case, but making that declaration before seeing or using the product is a mistake, and no one knows that better than we do.

Outstanding Stock Tested and Inspected Rigorously

At Civic Recycling we take pride in our reconditioned products. We can certainly understand the reticence of people out there to take the plunge into “used” parts, but we would like to explain why we believe so deeply in our reconditioned products. While some places may take shortcuts when it comes to refurbishing a product, we most certainly do not. Each of our reconditioned circuit breakers is professionally done and accompanied with a 36-point interior and exterior visual inspection. Once that’s been completed, we begin our actual testing of the circuit breaker. Molded case circuit breakers consist of three parts- the insulation, the contacts, and the trip unit. Each one of these components is tested using three different pieces of equipment, which we’ll quickly summarize:

  1. Insulation Resistance: this test is done to verify the condition of the breaker’s insulating materials;
  2. Contact Resistance: this test verifies the current path in the breaker;
  3. Over Current Trip Test: this test is done to verify the time-current characteristics of the breaker, and is done to ensure it trips to the manufacturer’s exact factory specifications.

After our rigorous testing has been completed we issue a test report for each breaker that has completed testing. This not only offers peace of mind, but acts as a sort of insurance policy for those purchasing the breakers.

Reconditioned Circuit Breakers and Electric Parts

So what does this all amount to? Well, it allows us to call ourselves Canada’s #1 circuit breaker specialist and provide an absolutely fantastic array of products. Not only do we carry a wide variety of reconditioned circuit breakers (which, again, have gone through our rigorous testing), but a wide selection of new products as well. Our outstanding stock is what we consider our advantage, and we are now able to offer these products for purchase online. Obsolete is now the obvious and our customers love it!

What we want everyone to know is that reconditioned products, when dealt with properly and tested rigorously and thoroughly, can perform to the exact same levels as a new product, all the while saving money. With the testing our products go through, as well as the test reports that accompany all of our reconditioned products, we know that they will perform exactly how they should. Along with the cost savings, the peace of mind that comes along with that is invaluable. That’s why we don’t believe that “used” products are obsolete, and in many cases, have become the obvious choice for our customers.

Buy Circuit Breakers and Outstanding Stock

Should you need assistance, we’re always here to offer a helping hand whether that be through visiting our store, sending in an email, or calling one of our professionals for the opinion you need. We’ll assist with any inquiries that come our way and look forward to assisting anyone who has questions. We have the answers.

Top Five Facts on Reconditioned Electrical Equipment

reconditioned testing blog post civic recycling equipment 235 volts

As Canada’s #1 circuit breaker specialist, it’s pretty clear that we have a good idea of what separates a quality product from one that won’t cut it. A lot of folks think that a product needs to be new to be able to perform at the levels they expect, and while that is true, reconditioned products need not be overlooked.

At Civic, we specialize in recycled and reconditioned circuit breakers. We do this for a number of reasons and chief among them is that we believe we can provide a product that performs just as well as something new, but for a relative bargain. Not only do we believe in providing our clients with value for the products they choose to buy, but we back this value up with a one year, 100% guarantee of performance. We don’t expect our customers to buy products of a lower quality, nor would we provide one to them, which is what makes our guarantee so important.

 Facts on Reconditioned Products

Instead of merely paying lip service to our guarantee and our reconditioned products, we want to share what makes these products perform at the highest levels. This starts and ends with the rigorous testing we put all of our products through before we put them to market. With that in mind, we would like to share a little bit about how extensive our testing actually is, as we’re happy to pull back the curtain and share with our customers all the work we put into getting the products right:

  • Our testing standards meet and/or exceed testing standards set out by  PEARLNEMANETA, IEEE and even the manufacturers testing standards.
  • The reconditioned breakers we sell come with a unique tracking number that corresponds to the test report that goes with your breaker.
  • Breakers are first cleaned inside and out then undergo a step by step 36-point visual inspection of the exterior and interior
  • Three different pieces of equipment are required in order to fully test a breaker and determine that it is safe, reliable and trips according to the manufacturer’s own trip curve: insulation resistance, contact resistance, and overcurrent trip test
  • We also perform Low Voltage Molded Case Circuit Breaker with Thermal Magnetic Trip Inspection. This includes nine important steps to guarantee performance: case, lugs, operating mechanism, interphase separators, arc extinguishers/chutes, arcing contacts, main contacts, current carrying components, and thermal/magnetic trips.

Not only this, we back up all of our testing with written test results which is a sort of insurance policy for our customers. They know exactly how extensive the testing was, so not only do they have a guarantee that the product was put through the proper testing, but they know it will perform to the highest of standards. When there’s a lot at stake these guarantees mean a lot to everyone who is relying on these breakers to do their job

Priority on Safety and Testing Standards

At Civic Recycling, safety and product performance are our two main goals and as you can tell, we take these things very seriously. With our guarantee and the extensive and rigorous testing we put all of our breakers through, we’re extremely confident that our existing customers, and you, will be wholly satisfied with the way our products perform.

Should you want to find out more, don’t hesitate to call in to our sales centre or send an email ([email protected]). We stand by all of our products whether they’re new, recycled, or reconditioned, and we’re always happy to tell you why.

Top 8 Myths about Reconditioned Electrical Equipment

Reconditioned Electrical Equipment pearl professional apparatus recyclers league testing myths breakers

Ever heard something about electrical equipment you weren’t too sure about? What about reconditioned electrical equipment? Depending on what you heard it may be flat out wrong. Knowing the facts about reconditioned equipment is important. According to PEARL knowing the difference can “save you big bucks while helping your company meet environmental goals”.

PEARL is the Professional Electronics Apparatus Recyclers League. They ensure the quality AND safety of electrical equipment. Here at Civic Recycling we are a proud member and are certified with the organization.

Pearl has a fantastic article showcasing the top myths about reconditioned equipment. Click here to read the entire article, we will be showcasing and summarizing each point in our “Top 8 myths” post. Know the difference between fact and fiction from Civic Recycling and PEARL!

The myths are as follows:

Myth #1 – Reconditioned electrical equipment could be counterfeit

Reconditioned doe not equal counterfeit. Reconditioned models may not be supported by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) but that does not mean they can be lumped under the same categories as surplus and counterfeit. As always all equipment is tested to high standards. Civic Recycling would know right away if anything was out of place.

Reconditioned equipment is obviously not new and in the case of counterfeit equipment, it almost always is. Counterfeit models will likely be in new packaging and can’t easily be mistaken for a reconditioned one. Most often residential style breakers or MCCBs is where counterfeiting occurs.

Myth #2 – Reconditioned electrical equipment is not as safe as new

Reconditioned electrical equipment is just as safe as new models as we have already outlined in a previous post. It may even be safer! This is because OEMs only batch test their products, reconditioning requires 100% device testing. The fact that the testing standards are so high are a testament to this fact. Civic Recycling is so sure about safety standards that we offer a 1-year warranty on all our products. Pretty great right? Visit our testing page for more on our process. Typically the general standards are as follows:

  • Conduct initial test
  • Disassemble, inspect, and clean
  • Replace/recondition worn and aging components
  • Reassemble
  • Perform verification test
  • Document
  • Certify

Myth #3 – Reconditioned equipment is less reliable, lower quality than new

As the PEARL article states:

“If a piece of electrical equipment was reliable and high quality when it was new, then older electrical equipment reconditioned to perform as good as or better than the original must also be considered reliable and high quality. Quality isn’t a question of new versus reconditioned, but rather, can you trust the source of the equipment? If you’re familiar with an OEM brand, you probably trust them.”

And on top of that, all PEARL certified companies such as Civic Recycling hold themselves to high standards in testing and quality.

Myth #4 – Reconditioned electrical equipment costs less, but more to operate

This argument is valid for certain types of equipment such as new TP-1 transformers and circuit breakers with solid-state trip technology or zone alarms. But most electrical equipment is passive and is not required to consume electricity to do its job. So the argument is not valid for most of the 21 types of standard electrical equipment covered by PEARL.

In addition, new and reconditioned equipment will be field-tested regardless. Onward to safety!

Myth #5 – Reconditioned electrical equipment increases liability

Let’s start by saying that each piece of reconditioned equipment is tested twice. Once before reconditioning and once after. Say one out of 100 breakers were tested coming off an assembly line…which would you trust more? Both are pretty solid bets but liability is not an issue for reconditioned equipment.

Myth #6 – Only OEMs can properly recondition electrical equipment

OEMs say that a company needs to understand the exact electrical engineering behind an electrical device and should only purchase reconditioned products from OEMs. However, there are some differences between private OEM reconditioning versus public PEARL reconditioning standards

  1. PEARL uses independent, third-party electrical engineers to review its standards (OEMs do not).
  2. PEARL makes its standards available to the public for review and comment. Open and transparent! OEMs don’t do this.

Myth #7 – Reconditioned electrical equipment invalidates the (UL) mark

Underwriter Laboratories (UL) official position is that independent testing and certification companies takes no position on the validity of UL marks after the equipment leaves the factory.

Myth #8 – Myths make for bad business decisions

By debunking myths and focusing on facts we can be sure to develop competitive solutions to electrical needs. The goal is to purchase the highest-quality electrical equipment at the best possible price and with the least amount of lead-time. Civic Recycling is happy to be serving Canadians since 1995.

A quick recap on each Myth we have debunked!

  • Reconditioned electrical equipment could be counterfeit
  • Reconditioned electrical equipment is not as safe as new
  • Reconditioned electrical equipment is less reliable, lower quality than new product
  • Reconditioned electrical equipment costs less to buy but more to operate
  • Reconditioned electrical equipment increases liability concerns
  • Only OEMs can properly recondition electrical equipment
  • Reconditioning electrical equipment invalidates the Underwriter Laboratories (UL) mark
  • Get It Straight: Myths make for bad business decisions

Electrical Safety: The Top 5 Points you Need to Know

civic safety top five tips safe pearl nema neta ieee

Civic Recycling offers new and reconditioned electrical equipment. Our certified technicians follow our rigorous testing standards on all reconditioned products. Safety is our top priority and so we have put together some information to keep you safe.

Electrical safety is critical both at home and at work. Here, we look at 5 top considerations to enhance your safety.

Electrical Safety: Use sockets with tamper-resistant (TR) receptacles

The National Electrical Code (NEC) requires that all buildings constructed or renovated after 2008 have tamper-resistant (TR) receptacles. TR receptacles are special devices with spring-loaded shutters that close off the contact openings of the receptacles. Because both springs need to be compressed before the shutters can open, electrocutions resulting from accidental insertion of a conducting material into one contact opening can be minimized.

Ensure that your home has ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs)

When there is a break in the grounding path of a low-resistance current, the current can take an alternative path to the ground through the user. This is called a ground fault. Ground faults are common and have resulted in severe injuries and even deaths in the past. Ground Fault Current Interrupters (GFCIs) are lightning-quick circuit breakers used to cut off such faults.

Protect your electrical outlets with Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs)

Replacement receptacles should be arc-fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) protected. An AFCI is an electrical safety device that helps to prevent fires.  It resembles a GFCI in the sense that both devices have test buttons and a reset button. The main difference, however, is that GFCIs are designed to protect people from getting electrocuted whereas AFCIs are meant to prevent fires.

Be extra careful with transformers

Transformers must be carefully tested before installation and continuously monitored thereafter. Make sure that there is no continuity (electrical leakage) between the primary and secondary coil. Also, ensure that there is no leakage between the power cord and any metal external parts such as the rivets. Most transformers are equipped with circuit breakers for additional safety.

Use only tested devices that meet industry quality standards

The design and manufacture of electrical devices is guided by certain industry standards. The Canadian Electrical Code or CE code develops and maintains these standards. Our neighbours to the South follow the National Electric Code and the National Fire Protection Association. Electrical components that fail to meet these standards might expose you to unnecessary danger. Civic Recycling certifications meet and often exceed the standards set out by PEARL (Professional Electrical Apparatus Recyclers League), NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association), IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and NETA (InterNational Electrical Testing Association).

All Civic Recycling electric devices; from circuit breakers to transformers, and fuses to motor controls, are tested to the highest standards to ensure that they are not only safe but very reliable.
